Army Foundation College, Harrogate
Our largest project to date involved roofing works to a large newbuild college for the Ministry of Defence. The work was carried out over a two year period, from September 2001 to July 2003, and comprised almost 22,000m2 of Marley Modern concrete interlocking roof tiles. In addition, we installed rigid insulation boards over the rafters prior to roof tiling and, because of the height of some of the buildings, all ridge, hip, verge and valley details had to be dry fixed.
The highly exposed nature of the site resulted in a robust fixing specification for the Marley Modern roof tiles and so it was critical that each and every tile was fixed in accordance with the details provided by the manufacturer. It is a testament to our operatives that during the works and upon completion, we did not have a single incidence of tiles blown from the roof by the extremely severe winds experienced regularly by the site. It is further testament that the roof has remained maintenance-free since the completion of the project and all hip, ridge and monoridge tiles are still undisturbed by the elements.
The statistics for the roof tiling itself make impressive reading. We installed nearly a quarter of a million roof tiles, laid on forty miles of roofing battens. These were on top of 23 miles of counterbattens, fixed with nearly 150,000 stainless steel twist shank nails, on almost 7,700 sheets of 2.4m x 1.2m rigid insulation boards. In all, the roof area would cover more than four football pitches!
Here you can see photographs of hip and valley details, showing the high degree of accuracy and finish achieved by our tradesmen, of which we are justifiably proud. No matter how large or how small the project, it is the philosophy of Jarvis & Womack to provide the highest level of quality and service to our client.
