Fire Damage to Roof at the Somerfield Store

Before

LMBC Ltd

On the 27th of June a major fire tore through the Somerfield store at The Pavements, Chesterfield. The fire caused significant damage to the building and roof structure and there was some doubt as to whether Somerfield would return to the site.

The building has now undergone a complete refurbishment and has reopened as a Tesco Store.

Information about the project

Towards the end of last year, a fire broke out at the Somerfield store on New Beetwell Street in Chesterfield, gutting the building and Llantwit Major Building Contractors of Bridgend (LMBC) were appointed as main contractor to carry out to reinstatement works. Jarvis & Womack undertook the roof slating works to the new timber structure, using materials to match the remaining unaffected areas of roof.

Unusually, having been originally slated by a French contractor, the slates were fixed using hooks rather than the traditional copper nails and so it was necessary for us to follow suit. In addition, all of the hips and valleys were formed using mitre-cut slates on both sides, which presented the challenge of aligning the roof battens all around the entire roof structure. In all, we fixed over 72,000 Spanish slates and mitre cut over 3,000 slate-and-a-half to hips and valleys, along with 1200 Kingspan K7 100mm thick rigid insulation boards and 6,400m of 38x38mm treated softwood counterbattens, fixed with stainless steel twist shank nails.

Our large workforce of highly-skilled craftsmen enabled us to complete the works to a very high standard within a limited timescale and yet again demonstrated our ability to provide quality and service of the highest order, no matter how large or small the project.
